Katy ISD Teachers Embrace Technology – “Bring your own device or BYOD”

Here in the 21st century, the trend is all things technology. Many school districts, while having the physical equipment to enhance its student bodies digital citizenry, continue developing blue prints, pilot programs, and curriculum to address the needs of todays technology-driven learners. Effective teachers require a technology comfort and savvy in order to enhance their classroom learning environments.

In the video below, Katy Independent School District partnered with CISCO in piloting a new technology initiative, “Bring your own device or BYOD”. While many districts continue to grapple with both legal and local policies that not only ban mobile devices but also levy consequences to the teacher, student and parent such as reprimands and fines.

In an effort to secure networks and connect classrooms to current trends, the Katy ISD school district piloted an initiative to address 21st century learMobile Phone Devicener needs with “BYOD” or bring your own device to school.

Being on the front line of the often times technology divide, teachers need to be liaisons of both changing policies and current trends, comfortably and creatively weaving existing technological capabilities into lessons as often as possible. While many classrooms are already equipped with a number of student desktops, interactive white boards, projectors and possibly laptops, network security, capability and costs must be taken into consideration.
